When Is the Best Time to Take Newborn Photos?
One of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents is: When is the best time to take newborn photos?
The short answer is that there is no single perfect day. Every baby and every family is different! However, the first few weeks after birth are a wonderful time to document all of those tiny newborn details that change so quickly.
As a newborn photographer in Franklin, TN, I offer relaxed, in-home newborn sessions that allow families to enjoy this experience without having to leave the comfort of their own home.
What Is the Best Age for Newborn Photos?
For most families, I recommend scheduling newborn photos within the first two to three weeks after birth. During this time, babies are still very sleepy, love being held close, and have all of those sweet newborn details—from tiny fingers and toes to sleepy stretches and cuddles.
However, because my newborn sessions are natural and baby-led rather than focused on complicated posing, there is much more flexibility. If your baby is three, four, or even several weeks old, it is absolutely not too late for beautiful newborn photos.
When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer?
I recommend booking your newborn photography session before your baby arrives, ideally during your second or third trimester.
Of course, babies rarely arrive exactly when expected! Your due date simply gives us a general timeframe. Once your baby is born, we can finalize the session date based on your baby's arrival and how your family is feeling.
Booking ahead also means there is one less thing to organize during those first busy days at home with your newborn.
Why I Love Photographing Newborns at Home
An in-home newborn photography session is designed to be relaxed. You don't have to pack a diaper bag, get your newborn into the car, or worry about arriving somewhere at a specific time.
Instead, I come to your home and photograph your family in the place where you're already creating your first memories together.
We have plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, and cuddling. Your baby doesn't need to sleep throughout the entire session, either. Awake moments, little stretches, yawns, and tiny expressions can create some of the most meaningful photographs.
Don't Worry If You Miss the “Newborn Window”
If your baby is already a few weeks old and you haven't scheduled newborn photos yet, don't worry.
There is no point when your baby suddenly becomes "too old" to photograph. Your images may simply look a little different as your baby becomes more alert and expressive—and that can be incredibly special, too.
The most important thing is documenting this season before it passes.
